On November 17 at 11:00 the Valdai Discussion Club will hold an expert discussion, titled "Clash of New World Orders: Path to Confrontation" together with the presentation of the book “Russia Against the Rest: The Post-Cold War Crisis of World Order”, written by Richard Sakwa, Professor of Russian and European Politics at the University of Kent, Associate Fellow of Chatham House.
The end of the 45-year Cold war was marked by the beginning of a "cold peace" in Russia-West relations. For 25 years Europe has experienced a period of uncertainty: the old institutions continued to exist, new structures and processes did not receive their practical implementation, and the problems of the European security were not resolved. In 2014 the European system, established after the fall of the Berlin Wall, collapsed.
At the same time, an alliance was formed that was directed not just against the West or the US, but against the double standards generated by the Western hegemony. Moscow, Beijing and their allies argue that modern international institutions are autonomous, the structures created by the victorious powers after the Second World War are universal, and such issues as the fairness of the international financial system, human rights, the survival of the planet Earth itself, should be decided together by all humanity. The main question for today is whether humanity can move from multipolarity to a diplomatically regulated pluralist multipolar order? This and other questions will be answered by the participants in the discussion.
