He worked at the PIR Center for Policy Studies on arms control projects (1997–2001). He headed Moscow Office of the Washington-based think-tank Center for Defense Information (2001–2007). Since 2015 he serves as an adviser to the President of the Diplomatic Academy of Kyrgyzstan under the Kyrgyz Ministry of Affairs. He was a visiting fellow with the Russia and Eurasia Program of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (2016). He was a Rice Faculty Fellow with the McMillan Center at Yale University, teaching a course on Central Asia (2017).
Throughout the last eight years, he has been involved in a number of projects on Central Asia and Afghanistan. This includes research projects for Russian, US and European organisations, and also for international organisations - UN (UNDP and ESCAP).
Ivan Safranchuk also works in the advisory council of the Center on Global Counterterrorism Cooperation.
