Russia-Turkey Relations: The Syrian Factor. Expert Discussion

On April 4, at 11.00, the Valdai Discussion Club hosted an expert discussion titled “Russia-Turkey relations: the Syrian factor”, with the participation of the experts from the Turkish SETA Foundation.

Russia and Turkey play a substantive role both in the Syrian settlement and in the process of bringing peaceful life back to the country. Despite their different views on a number of issues, Moscow and Ankara synchronize their positions and hold the contacts on the highest and high levels in order to coordinate their actions. On April 8, another visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Russia is scheduled, with the preceding visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to Antalya.

Russia and Turkey managed to overcome the consequences of the tragic incident of 2015. Today, they are developing the cooperation in various fields including trade, construction of the first nuclear power plant in Turkey, realization of TurkStream project. One of the last initiatives of Ankara is providing the Russians with the right to visit Turkey with domestic passports.

How does the future of Russian-Turkish cooperation look like? What strategies the two countries have? What is special in the interaction of Russia and Turkey with the government in Damascus? What are the prospects for establishing peace and restoring the country's national sovereignty? The participants of the discussion will address these and other questions.
