The Northern Sea Route and its Impact on World Trade

The length of the Northern Sea Route from Kara Strait to Providence Bay is about 5,600 km. NSR is almost twice shorter than other sea routes from Europe to the Far East:
for instance, the distance from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok through the Suez Canal is 23,200 km, while the same passage through NSR equals 14,280 km, which makes it 40% shorter.
Maritime navigation lasts from two to four months, and the use of icebreakers permits sailing the year round. The length of the route from Murmansk to the Japanese port of Yokohama through the Suez Canal equals 12,840 nautical miles (23,780 km), while the same route mapped through the NSR is only 5,770 nautical miles (10,690 km) long, which is 2.23 times less.
