Russians say cheese to Vladimir Putin’s EU food import ban

Vladimir Putin was there to discuss foreign policy, but Oleg Sirota wanted to focus on cheese. Nobody at the Valdai Club meeting, an annual talking shop for Russian experts and analysts, was the least bit surprised that Russia’s president was comfortable with the switch in conversation: in today’s Russia, the two topics have much in common.

If Moscow’s foreign correspondents during the past 50 years have written of communism and the collapse and chaos that followed it, today it feels as though we are destined to be the cheese corps, such is the frequency with which it features in dispatches.
