On May 16, the Valdai Club hosted an expert discussion titled “Security in the Asia-Pacific: Between Deterrence and Cooperation”.
Recently, competition between China and the United States has been steadily growing in the security sphere of the Asia-Pacific. It is based on the fundamental contradictions between the two powers regarding the global and regional order. At the same time, almost all other countries in the region strive for cooperation and the achievement of their main development goals in security matters.
China adheres to the same approach, but constantly faces pressure from the United States and the threat of the polarisation of the regional order. Russia, in turn, consistently advocates for the Asia-Pacific to be an area of broad international cooperation, which corresponds to the leading role of the region in global economic development and international trade.
What are the current trends in the development of the Asia-Pacific? What scenarios for Chinese-American relations are most likely now? What is the significance of regional cooperation organisations in the Asia-Pacific? What can Russia's contribution be to stabilize the situation in this region?
