On March 24 at 12:00 noon, Moscow Time (GMT+3), the Valdai Discussion Club will host a discussion of the Russia-Iran Partnership Treaty.

One of the most significant events of the beginning of the foreign policy year was the signing of the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Russia and the Islamic Republic of Iran during the visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Moscow. The agreement established a legal framework for co-operation between the two countries on a wide range of political, economic and humanitarian issues and in the long term may become one of the elements of the new Eurasian security architecture. Meanwhile, the situation in the Middle East remains tense, as Washington continues to threaten Tehran. There are also plenty of points of contention in the Caspian and South Caucasus regions.

Security commitments, efforts to counter the unilateral restrictive measures (sanctions) launched by third countries, and creating independent mechanisms for mutual settlements are important components of the Treaty. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the agreement promotes the development of such projects as the Bushehr nuclear power plant and the North-South corridor, which connects the Resht-Astara railway line from Russia and Belarus to Iranian ports in the Persian Gulf.

How can the main provisions of the Treaty be implemented? What level has Russian-Iranian co-operation reached in key areas? What can be done to develop bilateral relations in the short, medium and long term? These questions and more will be explored by the participants of the discussion.
