Online
List of speakers

On August 10, at 11:00 Moscow time (GMT+3), the Valdai Club and the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) will host an online discussion, titled “ASEAN and the Indo-Pacific Region: Trajectories of Cooperation”.

Over the past few decades, ASEAN has significantly increased its role in the global economy. This is due to the high growth rates demonstrated by ASEAN members, which were well above the world average. ASEAN countries are also leading in advancing trade integration with a wide network of trade agreements, recently complemented by digital economic agreements concluded by Singapore and other members of the association.

ASEAN’s success in economic modernisation and regional economic integration has intensified the efforts of the world’s leading powers to bring ASEAN closer to their integration projects and initiatives. In particular, the US-backed QUAD+ initiative aims to include some ASEAN countries in building a wider range of allies in the Indo-Pacific region.

For its part, China has also launched initiatives such as BRICS+, which aim to strengthen regional and interregional cooperation between ASEAN and other developing countries in the Global South.

How will the role of ASEAN evolve in the Indo-Pacific region and will the association continue to be guided by the principles of neutrality in the ever-expanding network of alliances? What are the future trajectories of ASEAN’s development? What are the opportunities for Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) to further strengthen cooperation with ASEAN? What achievements of ASEAN can be replicated in other regional associations?
