The fifth Valdai Paper researches the current problems faced by Africa, an issue which has long been on the sideway of the global politics as seen in Russia. The authors show a huge gap between growth figures and the potential of the continent presented by various media and research papers and the real state of affairs. According to them there are still more problems than solutions, and the major challenge is remaining dependence on export of the natural resources. The last part of the paper aims to find an answer to the question What is it that Africa Needs to ensure a sustainable development and amelioration of standards of life for an ordinary citizen.

The paper is written by Alexandra ARKHAGELSKAYA , Leading researcher of Higher School of Economics as well as Institute for African Studies of Russian Academy of Sciences; Member of the Scientific Council of the National Committee for Research on BRICS; Executive Secretary of Russia – South Africa Dialogue Forum and Ian TAYLOR , Professor in International Relations and African Politics, University of St Andrews; Chair Professor, Renmin, University of China; Professor Extraordinary, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa; Honorary Professor, Institute of African Studies, Zhejiang Normal University, China; and a Visiting Scholar at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Uganda.
