Professor in International Relations and African Politics, University of St Andrews; Chair Professor, Renmin, University of China; Professor Extraordinary, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa; Honorary Professor, Institute of African Studies, Zhejiang Normal University, China; and a Visiting Scholar at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Uganda. Holds a DPhil from the University of Stellenbosch and a MPhil from the University of Hong Kong.
He also holds a teaching certificate from the International Language Institute, Cairo, Egypt, where he taught Ethiopian, Somali and Sudanese refugees Previous positions: Visiting Professor at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg, Sweden; the Lee Hysan Visiting Professor, Centre for China Studies, Chinese University of Hong Kong. Research interests: Africa's political economy and its international relations, Afro-Asian ties, emerging South-South relations and the notion of "rising powers" (e.g. the BRICS) and the implications for global development (and for Africa specifically).
