Third Central Asian Conference of the Valdai Discussion Club

On May 16-17, Tomsk hosted the Third Central Asian Conference of the Valdai Discussion Club. The conference topic was “Russia and Central Asia: Aligning With a Changing World”.

In keeping with tradition, the conference was held in Russia. This year the Club moved from the Volga region to the east, to the very heart of Siberia. The Valdai Club has repeatedly organised events in Siberia; exactly six years ago it co-hosted a discussion in Tomsk dedicated to the intellectual potential of Russia. This time, Tomsk State University, the oldest centre of professional training in Siberia, which celebrates its 145th anniversary this year, was chosen as the venue.

The third Central Asian Conference of the Valdai Club was held in Tomsk on May 16–17. On the second day of its work, two sessions took place. The fourth session opened during the day, which was devoted to common security challenges facing Russia and Central Asia. It was held in a closed-door format.

The Third Central Asian Conference of the Valdai Discussion Club took place in Tomsk on May 16–17. Andrey Bystritskiy, Chairman of the Board of the Foundation for Development and Support of the Valdai Discussion Club, noted in his opening speech that the world is undergoing global changes. Turbulence has swept over all regions, which has determined the need for a reorientation of Russian foreign policy.
