He has served as vice chairman of the Chinese Society for the Study of Sino-Russian relations.
He was a visiting scholar at the MGIMO University (1989–1990), and was a visiting fellow with the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in 2011 (CSIS, Washington DC).
From 1986 to 2004, he was a research fellow and director of the Department of Russia and Central Asia at Shanghai Institute for International Studies. He had been the director of the Center for Russia and Central Asia Studies, the Center of the SCO Studies, Fudan University (2005–2017).
His main research areas are Sino-Russian relations, Russian foreign policy, relations between China and Central Asia, Afghanistan, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.He has widely published analytical articles in Chinese, Russian, and English.
