What does "neo-mercantilism" mean? What does this term mean for the US? The bottom line is that the neo-liberalism of financial globalisation of 1983-2013 is not being replaced by a new edition of American hegemony, but by a rigid new US colonialism similar to its super-hegemony.

One of the key current trends in global politics is the gradual shift from ‘pure’ geopolitics and the hard/soft power of sovereign states to global problems (environmental, resource, demographic, and social). The past decade saw the term ‘global problems’ itself crystallize into a new concept, the Global Commons, understood in a narrowly environmental and a broader social sense. It is discussed both at the UN in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals and at various international venues.

A few sensational victories including Donald Trump’s rise to power allowed the right wing to get a high profile. Now it is the Left that has a chance to regain initiative in order to challenge the neoliberal mainstream.

Since 2015, the Valdai Discussion Club has been studying global alternatives to the traditional neoliberal mainstream and their impact upon the world’s transformation. The main collision in the march of globalization is being shifted to domestic conflicts inside the West.
