This report is based on ISIS, as Portrayed by Foreign Media and Mass Culture, a research commissioned by the Foundation for Development and Support of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

The research is aimed at identifying the technique whereby foreign printed media and works of fiction portray the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) aka the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) aka Daesh. ISIS – the organisation prohibited in Russia.

The research project consists of two main parts:

- Analysing foreign printed media publications on ISIS;

- Analysing foreign feature films and TV series focusing on modern-day Islamic terrorism.

The analysis covered publications dating from June 29, 2014 (when ISIS declared the establishment of a “Caliphate” on Iraqi and Syrian territories under its control) to November 30, 2015.
