The Syrian conflict has gone very differently from the conflicts we knew before: it is extremely multifaceted, it involves many actors, and the border between war and peace in it is sometimes fading, Nathalie Tocci, Director, Institute of International Affairs (IAI); Special Advisor to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President of the European Commission, believes. “I think we will be dealing with the messiness of Syria for a very long time,” she suggests. All the major actors involved shall recognize this complexity and try to reconcile, if not coordinate, their visions of the region’s future.
