Russia always suspected that the EU was an empire in denial, and such an interpretation is admissible. The EU has never taken seriously enough the state borders, the entire project of the European integration is to overcome and erase borders. So the idea of expansion is on the basis of the European Union. As Europeans today do not believe in military power and reject military methods, they are convinced that no one can take seriously their expansion as a threat. This leads to serious misunderstandings. Ivan Krastev, Head of the Centre for Liberal Strategies in Sofia and participant of the 12th Annual meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club talks on this issue and many other things.
