Russia’s Pivot to the East as a New Typology of Globalization

The main results of Russia's turn to the East, as well as its future prospects, were the subject of TV debates organized by the Valdai Discussion Club and Rossiya-24 TV channel as part of the Third Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok. Leading experts from Russia, the United States and Asia took part in the discussion.

Northeast Asia: A Difficult Road to Common Prosperity and Security

Joint economic initiatives and security issues in Northeast Asia were at the heart of the discussion at the Valdai Club session in the framework of the Eastern Economic Forum, held on September 6 in Vladivostok. Participants at the session, titled "The Russia–China–Japan–US Quadrangle: Are There Opportunities for Cooperation?" shared their views on the prospects for multilateral cooperation on the economic development of the region and the solution of the North Korean nuclear missile problem.

What Will Be the Main Driver of Growth in the Russian Far East?

After infrastructure and big business, medium-sized businesses and foreign companies began to come to Russia's Far East. They understand that the strategic location of the region gives them a unique opportunity to organize export-oriented production. However, for the further successful development of the region it is necessary to get rid of administrative barriers, said Alexander Ivlev, managing partner of Ernst & Young, in an interview with valdaiclub.com.

Eurasia: Doomed to Division?

The political events of the past few years give hope that Russia has shed its ambivalence and now sees itself as an independent development center rather than the periphery of Europe or Asia. But it is necessary to harness Russia’s nascent self-identification in collective institutions of regional cooperation and to integrate Russia’s national interest with the interests of Eurasia as a macroregion.

Russia-South Korea Cooperation in the Far East: Still a Lot of Potential

Actually the South Korean trade and investments in the Far Eastern region are increasing, by 6% in the last year and the first half of 2017. But comparing to the potential of the region, such amount is not very big, said Jung Taik Hyun, President of the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, in an interview to www.valdaiclub.com on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.

On September 6, 2017, the Valdai Discussion Club and Russia 24 Channel will hold TV debates, titled "Russia’s Pivot to the East: Outcomes and New Goals". A programme of action is needed which will strengthen Russia’s position in Asia and create a critical mass of collaboration and cooperation.
