The development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies occupies a special place in Indonesia’s national policy, which is aimed at fully digitalising all sectors of the economy. Joko Widodo, when he was the President of Indonesia, said that any country “that controls AI can potentially rule the world.” With this statement, he elevated the role of AI in Indonesia’s digital transformation and launched a series of initiatives aimed at laying the foundation for the further development of breakthrough technologies in Indonesia. The article was prepared especially for the Russian-Indonesian seminar “Indonesia – Russia: From the Past to the Future, History and Prospects”.

This concept note, presented in the Jakarta seminar, provides the foundation for understanding the strategic, diplomatic, and military dimensions of Indonesia-Russia relations and the broader context of global interconnectivity from 2025 to 2037.

Until recently, Russia’s interests in the Asia-Pacific did not go beyond maintaining a status quo there, with a focus on the principle of ASEAN’s centrality and taking part in ASEAN events. Therefore, expanding political, economic and cultural ties with this association was a priority for Russia.

On September 24, 2024, the Valdai Discussion Club will hold a joint Russian-Indonesian conference in Jakarta. It offers something unique: in addition to the current foreign policy issues on the agenda of our countries, a special session of the conference will be devoted to the history of bilateral relations and the role of historical memory in the development of the bilateral dialogue.
