The 2019 European Parliament Election: An Expert Discussion

On May 27, 2019, at 11:00, the Valdai Discussion Club hosted an expert discussion on the results of the European Parliament elections. Elections to the European Parliament will be held from May 23 to 26 May in 28 EU member countries. Following the results, 751 MPs will be elected, who will represent more than 512 million Europeans. Thus, these will be the largest transnational elections in history. How will the election results affect EU policy? Will the policy of the European Parliament change if the Eurosceptics win? What coalitions will be formed in the European Parliament? What will happen to the UK MEPs if the UK leaves the EU? What impact will this election have on Russia-EU relations? How will the future dialogue between Russian and European legislators look? The participants of the expert discussion will answer these and other questions.

Equilibrium in Europe. What's to be expected from the New European Parliament?

Interestingly enough, the elections to the European Parliament have not yet ended: the process will now shift from the public sphere to the negotiation of internal agreements on the distribution of posts; this determines the nature of the EU executive branch. The decision-making apparatus will also change. How so? This was discussed by a panel of experts at a meeting which was held at the Valdai Discussion Club on May 27 according to Chatham House rules.

A possible right-wing coalition in the European Parliament gained slightly less than a quarter of all deputy mandates and became the fourth-most significant MP group. All this is a rather mixed company and the problem for this group is that unlike its opponents - conservatives and socialists –its participants cannot unite around the whole range of issues that make up the European agenda.
