On March 20, 2018, at 15:00, the Valdai Discussion Club will hold an expert discussion, titled “Change of Course in Washington and Fate of the World Order.”

The unexpected victory of Donald Trump and the heated debates between supporters and opponents of the new US president have evolved into a violent political crisis. Trump does not manage to conduct his legislative initiatives through Congress, his administration is feverish at personnel rearrangements, work of the cabinet is accompanied by resonant investigations. Experts disagree on whether the current administration is able to survive the first term.

Trump proclaimed significant changes in the foreign policy. Key trade agreements – TPP and NAFTA – are being revised. Washington threatens NATO allies with a review of military commitments, departs from the previously cautious line on the North Korean nuclear program and threatens it with war. Trump’s latest statements about the United States’ intention to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports can cause a trade war between Washington and Brussels. As a result, the United States became the main source of uncertainty in the world. However, despite internal and external difficulties, it remains the leading world power.

How will the current crisis influence the structural position of the United States? How will the changes in Washington’s foreign policy affect the balance of forces in the world? Will the current US foreign policy be sustainable? These and other questions will be addressed by the participants in the discussion.
