Chinese Expert on What Will Happen If the Conflict Between Russia and the US Goes Out of Control

If the conflict between Russia and the US goes out of control, it will have a negative long-term impact on the international system, said Chen Dongxiao, president of the Shanghai Academy of International Studies, in an exclusive interview with valdaiclub.com on the sidelines of the Russian-Chinese conference in Shanghai.

“In the long run, China prefers a more conciliatory and workable relationship between Russia and the US. They are big powers and their relationship is very important to guarantee the stability of the world order as a whole and in regions in particular,” the expert said.

According to him, if the parties lose patience and the conflict gets out of control, this will affect the overall stability of relations between major powers and will have a long-term negative impact on the international system.

“It is very important and urgent for both Moscow and Washington to reach a real agreement on the most important issues. Nowadays a lack of direct communication and exchange of views between high ranking officials is very risky and dangerous,” Chen Dongxiao said.

The 5th Russian-Chinese conference of the Valdai Discussion Club, titled “Russia and China: Contemporary development challenges” is being held in Shanghai and is attended by more than 50 officials and leading experts from Russia and China. You can download the Programme here.
