Opening of the 15th Annual Meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club

On October 15, 2018, the 15th Annual meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club began in Sochi. This year’s meeting is an anniversary one, but this is not its main feature. For the first time in several years it is dedicated not to the “world around us”, but to Russia. This year’s topic is “Russia: Agenda for the 21st Century.”

During the initial session, which was dedicated to presentation of the annual Valdai Club report titled “Living in a Crumbling World”, international experts discussed scenarios of a new world order. One can get to know from our summary what the future is going to look like.

Besides, on the opening day, the Valdai Club Award ceremony was held. This year’s winner is Dominic Lieven, the author of a number of works on the history of the Russian Empire.

However, the first working day started hours before the first session, at 10:00. The Sirius Educational Centre for gifted children hosted a meeting of the centre alumni with the Valdai Club experts. Its students presented their vision of how technologies affect the socio-political development of Russia in the medium term, and the experts got a detailed idea of how the next generation of the most active citizens imagines the development of Russia. We remind you that the Valdai Club Annual meeting will last four days – from October 15 to October 18. Most sessions will traditionally follow the Chatham House rule, which presumes anonymity of all discussions. But this does not mean that no one will know the conclusions reached by the experts. First, analytical summaries on the results of each day will be published on our website. Second, the most interesting discussions are open.

You can watch live broadcasts of these sessions on our website, and explore the schedule in the Programme. Stay tuned!
