Opening of the Valdai Club Middle East Conference. Session 1. Russia in the Middle East: A Paradox of Perception

On February 19-20, 2018, the Valdai Discussion Club in partnership with the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences held a conference, titled “Russia in the Middle East: Playing on All Fields.” The conference took place in the format of an expert dialogue with the participation of well-known politicians, diplomats, experts and public figures from more than 30 countries.

The participants discussed the following issues:

  • What is the current hierarchy of Russia’s interests in the region?

  • How do other actors perceive Russia’s role in the region?

  • Is there a prospect of Russia’s military assets being used further and how can they be correlated with the tools of diplomacy?

  • To what extent is Russia’s mediation necessary for regional and external actors?

  • What are the prospects of trilateral interaction between Russia, Turkey, and Iran and can new multilateral alliances with Russia’s participation emerge?
