On April 7, the Valdai Club hosted an online discussion, titled “Information Security and the Digitalisation Process: Between Development and Fears”
Digital mechanisms are more important than ever amid the coronavirus pandemic: almost all negotiations and personal meetings of state leaders have shifted to online venues. The vivid examples include the G20 summit and the UN Security Council meeting. There is no doubt that such virtual meetings discuss issues that are sensitive from the point of view of security and confidentiality, and require additional security measures. Meanwhile, hacker attacks in recent years have become frequent and are increasingly used as a tool in international politics. As an example, we can recall the Stuxnet virus, which disabled the Iranian nuclear plant in 2010.
Thus, the digital economy, based on the development and implementation of modern technologies, carries both obvious advantages and threats. Ensuring information security is becoming one of the highest-priority tasks at the state level and at the level of individual organisations. At the same time, some measures to control this area directly concern citizens, and here we can mention the practice of introducing QR codes.
How does a society find a balance between digital control and digital development? What roles do business and the state play in this process? What are the best formats for developing common approaches to ensuring digital security at the international level? The participants in the discussion answered these and other questions.
