Valdai Club Conference to Discuss Russia’s Role in Asia-Pacific

The fifth conference of the Asian section of the Valdai International Discussion Club “Toward the Great Ocean or the New Globalization of Russia” is to be held on July 6-7, 2012, in Moscow, Russia.

The upcoming conference will cover a wide range of questions facing Russia given Asia’s rising political and economic role in the international arena. Expansion and development of the relations between Russia and Asian countries, challenges and possibilities provided by bi- and multilateral cooperation, Russia’s position in the region are among the burning issues which require detailed expert analysis. The particular attention will be given to the modernization of Siberia and the Far East - one of the key directions of the Russia’s Asian strategy.

“I am so pleased to see that the results of the past two conferences of the Asian section of the Valdai International Discussion Club in Shanghai have been to some extent reflected in Russia’s recent strategy in Asia Pacific. This is a demonstration of effective interaction between political elites and the academic circle. We need this kind of close interaction, thought-provoking discussion and heated debates because we are now facing an unprecedented new period of globalization, which will, to a great extent, be quite different from the process of the past two decades”, said Professor Feng Shaolei, Dean of the School of Advanced International and Area Studies, East China Normal University, Director of the Center for Russian Studies, East China Normal University.

The framework of the meeting will also include the presentation of the report “Toward the Great Ocean, or the New Globalization of Russia”, authored by a group of the Russian members of the Club under the guidance of Chairman of the Valdai Club, Chairman of the Presidium of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy Sergei Karaganov.

The conference is expected to attract the leading experts on economy, political science and international relations from the top universities and research centers of China, India, Japan, Russia, South Korea and Singapore.

Since 2009 Valdai Discussion Club held four meetings of the Asian section on Russian-Chinese bilateral relations and Russia's role in Asia-Pacific, in Moscow, Beijing and Shanghai. The conferences were attended by over 100 experts from Russia, China, India, Japan and other countries.
