On February 25 at 16:00 Moscow Time (GMT+3), the Moscow venue of the Valdai Club will host a discussion titled “The Donroe Doctrine: Trump and Greenland”.
US claims to Greenland have become a major source of tension within NATO. At the very beginning of his presidential term, Donald Trump stated his intention to annex both Greenland and Canada. Following the operation to capture Nicolás Maduro, the American president has returned to these ambitions.
A heated debate over Greenland’s future is now underway. The Nordic countries and America’s NATO allies have sided with Denmark. Donald Trump, for his part, is introducing new tariffs against his opponents. As a conceptual framework for his policy, he has put forward the “Donroe Doctrine”—renaming the Monroe Doctrine, which holds the entire Western Hemisphere to be America’s sphere of influence, after himself. It is possible that, under this doctrine, the American president may revisit his claims not only regarding Greenland, but Canada as well.
What will the escalation of tensions within NATO lead to? Will Donald Trump succeed in achieving his aims with regard to Greenland? And what are the limits of solidarity among the Nordic states and the EU as a whole? The participants in the Valdai Club discussion will attempt to address these and other questions.
