Valdai Club to Discuss Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Based on the Recent European Leadership Network Report
Valdai Discussion Club Conference Hall (Bolshaya Tatarskaya 42, Moscow, Russia)
List of speakers

On March 5 at 13:00, the Valdai Discussion Club will host an expert discussion on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons with the participation of representatives of the European Leadership Network.

In recent years, the relevance of nuclear non-proliferation has continued to grow. This is primarily due to the erosion of nuclear arms control agreements, including the withdrawal of the US and Russia from the INF Treaty, as well as the unclear prospects of the New START Treaty. Nuclear technology continues to disseminate, lowering the threshold for the creation of nuclear weapons.

As part of the discussion, the panel will address the new report of the European Leadership Network, titled “Can Moscow and London find a way forward on the NPT?” The report reveals approaches to the problems of nuclear non-proliferation, and focuses on possible ways to resolve the accumulated contradictions between key players and adapt the non-proliferation regime to changing technological and political conditions.

What role can Moscow and London play in strengthening the non-proliferation regime? What can be done to compel the nuclear powers to sign and ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty? How can the international community ensure the secure transfer of technology for the peaceful use of nuclear energy? The participants of the discussion will answer these and other questions.
