On February 6, 2018, at 11:00 the Valdai Discussion Club will hold an expert discussion, titled “The Future of Jerusalem and Its Role in Solving the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict”.

There has not been any progress in the peace process in the Middle East. While President Trump announced that he is committed to offer a 'great deal' in order to settle the conflict, his recent declaration regarding Jerusalem is not likely to lead the path towards a balanced solution.

Indeed, the issue of Jerusalem, which is vital to the achievement of any agreement, is the most complex and challenging issue on the road to an agreement between Israelis and Palestinians.

The question of Jerusalem's political future is inextricably intertwined with the city's spiritual, historic, and national significance for both sides. Jerusalem has a great significance to the international Christian, Muslim, and Jewish worlds. The issue of Jerusalem is even more complicated when it comes to the question of the Temple Mount/Al-Haram Al-Sharif. The main challenge is that both sides, in their aspirations, demand exclusiveness in the Old City and in the Temple Mount. Approximately 870,000 Israelis and Palestinians reside in the city; therefore, any solution that is agreed upon should grant them all human rights, municipal services, and secure and prosperous lives.

What are the main challenges to solve the Jerusalem problem? What are the alternative solutions? How will the latest US decisions affect the peace process prospects? The participants will answer these and other questions.
