On April 16, at 11:00, the Valdai Discussion Club will host an expert discussion, titled “EU-Russia: Does Selective Cooperation Work?”

Relations between Russia and the European Union have reached a historic low. However, a few years ago both parties considered them an important and mutually beneficial project. Before the Ukrainian crisis of 2014, Russia and the EU had a number of common projects: the parties intended to create a unified visa-free economic space, and discussed the creation of a common security area.

The EU sanctions and counter sanctions from Russia dealt a serious blow to the relations between Brussels and Moscow.

At the same time, recent decisions made in Washington, first of all, the withdrawal from the JCPOA and the INF Treaty, attempts to influence the EU energy policy, create a new context where the EU and Russia can look at each other again.

What is the future of EU-Russia relations? Under what conditions can the sanctions policy be weakened or completely lifted? Participants in the expert discussion will address these and other issues.

Speakers:

  • Markus Ederer, EU Ambassador to Russia;

  • Alexey Gromyko, Director of the Institute of Europe, the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Moderator:

Working languages: Russian, English.
