He is the author of numerous books and scholarly articles, including The European Union and Global Capitalism: Origins, Development, Crisis (co-authored with Magnus Ryner, Palgrave, 2017) and Europe at Bay: In the Shadow of US Hegemony (co-authored with Magnus Ryner, Lynne Rienner, 2007). His articles have appeared in a variety of journals in the United States and Europe, including the New Left Review, International Organization, Review of International Political Economy, New Political Economy, and the International Spectator. He is a former member of the Executive Committee of the European Studies Association (EUSA). He was Visiting Professor (1993-4) and External Professor (1994-2000) in the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute (Florence, Italy).

German Elections 2017: The Calm Before the Storm?

The German federal election brought no major surprises. According to official exit polls Angela Merkel’s CDU and it’s Bavarian sister CSU won 33% of the total vote. Alternatives for Germany (AfD) received 13% as the far right entered the Bundestag for the first time since 1949. The Social Democratic party (SDP) continued it’s descent, capturing just 20% while the Left Party received 9%. With SPD leader Martin Schulz apparently ruling out entering a new government it is likely that Merkel will form a coalition with the Free Democratic Party (FDP) that returned to the Bundestag on 11% and the Greens, who received 9%.

Bundestag Elections: Merkel and Grand Coalition

Angela Merkel's center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) are expected to achieve a comfortable victory in the German elections on September 24, propelling her to a 4th term as chancellor. The CDU/CSU alliance is polling at 36% and so a coalition government will once again be assembled. The most likely result will be a continuation of the present Grand Coalition with the center-left Social Democrats (SPD), who are polling at 22%.

The G-20 summits were established in response to the global financial crisis of 2008-9, giving recognition to the important role that emerging powers outside the G-7/8 could play in resolving the crisis. Heads of state and government agreed to large increases in funding for the IMF and World Bank, and to modest increases in developing countries’ voting power in both organizations.
