Common Government to Bridge Divided Palestine -HAMAS

The agreement made in Cairo on forming a national unity government will allow the Palestinians to overcome discord and begin integration of all government structures.

The agreement made in Cairo on forming a national unity government will allow the Palestinians to overcome discord and begin integration of all government structures, Hamas External Relations Director Osama HAMDAN said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

The competing Palestinian movements Fatah and Hamas agreed on Tuesday on forming a common government within the next three months. Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian National Authority, will head the national unity cabinet.

“Forming a government will be an important move towards overcoming discord in Palestine. A common government is an important message to the whole world and to the Palestinian people,” Hamdan said.

The government-shaping mechanisms have already been agreed upon. The government will include experts that do not belong to any party or movement. This initiative will be followed by other steps, which have also already been agreed upon, including integration of government agencies, law enforcement and a shared security policy.

“This will require a lot of effort, but provided there is a common government the other steps can be carried out promptly,” Hamdan said.
He added that as a next move, the Palestinians will begin discussing a common election.

Since 2007, the Palestinians have been split, with the Hamas Islamist cabinet ruling in the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian National Authority, recognized by the global community, on the Western bank of Jordan.
