8th Summit of the Valdai Discussion Club: Sergei Mironov Predicts the Imminent Collapse of United Russia

Just Russia leader Sergei Mironov does not rule out that United Russia may split into several different parties in the future and claims that Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov is quite content with his status as “an oppositional runner-up” who is afraid of victory.

“It's possible that United Russia may have an unhappy fate. They will be elected for five more years as a parliamentary group but I truly doubt that the party will continue to exist. I do not exclude the possibility that the party might transform into several parties,” Mironov said at a meeting of the Valdai Club at RIA Novosti.

He believes Zyuganov is content with his role as an oppositional force that is not responsible for anything at all.

“Zyuganov is afraid of winning. His nightmare is that his party will win, and lose its status as a perpetual oppositional runner-up that has no responsibility, and would have to take control and suggest ways of development,” the Just Russia leader said.

He noted that he had read the Communists’ election program and considers it to be full of vain promises.

Just Russia members are ready to protest if parliamentary election results differ significantly from the exit-polls, the party’s leader Sergei Mironov announced at a meeting of the Valdai Club at RIA Novosti on Thursday.

“Our experience shows that exit-polls have a maximum deviation of two per cent from the actual results. If there are any discrepancies between exit-polls and the election results, we are ready to protest,” Mironov said. He said that Just Russia members are not going to tolerate “cheating.” Mironov added that most likely, Just Russia will not have to take extreme measures. “We are protecting the true expression of will after all. I hope that this (exit-poll and election mismatch) will not occur,” he added.

Mironov added that the average rating of Just Russia stands at 11%, while in metropolitan areas it exceeds 20%. Survey analysts have slightly different data. According to an October poll by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center, representatives of Just Russia might win only 7.9% of the votes. The poll involved 1,600 people from 138 areas in 46 regions. The research center also questioned ten political scientists. The forecast is therefore a compilation of this data, with a statistical error of up to 3.4%. Mironov also stressed that Just Russia is an opposing force to United Russia and its leader, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. He pointed out once again that Just Russia would not support United Russia’s candidate for the presidential post.

The party is going to nominate their candidate at a meeting on December 10.
