Presidential Elections in Brazil. Expert Discussion

On October 4, the Valdai Discussion Club hosted an expert discussion, devoted to the upcoming presidential elections in Brazil.

On October 7, Brazil will hold presidential elections that will be decisive for the country’s future. Now the country is almost split in two. On the one hand, there are supporters of the left-wing Workers’ Party, whose representatives, Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff, led the country for almost 15 years, and are now under investigation on corruption charges. On the other hand - their far-right opponents from the populist Social Liberal Party. Candidates from these two parties are leading in opinion polls.

Will the famous “left turn” end after the elections in Brazil and in Latin America as a whole? How will Brazil's foreign policy change after possible victory of the right-wingers? Will the position of Brazil regarding BRICS and cooperation with Russia change? The participants in the discussion will answer these and many other questions.

Speakers:

  • Alexander Schetinin, Director of the Latin American Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry;

  • Lyudmila Okuneva, Director of the BRICS Center, Professor at the Department of History and Politics of Europe and America at MGIMO University;

  • Zbigniew Ivanovsky, Head, Center for Political Studies, Institute of Latin American Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences.

Moderator:

  • Oleg Barabanov, Programme director of the Valdai Discussion Club.
