Javad Zarif: There Is a Problem of Anxieties In the Persian Gulf

In an interview with the Valdai Discussion Club, Mohammad Javad Zarif, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, spoke about the anxieties in the Persian Gulf region. After the 1979 revolution, Iran did not want to be the gendarme of the region, as the era of gendarmes is over. The United States conducted so many wars and created and illusion of an American Century, but even with the highest military budget the US cannot become the global hegemon. The same is true for the Gulf region. Neither Saudi Arabia, nor Iran or any other country can become new hegemons. We should have a secure and strong Gulf region with new regional security architecture without a one-country domination.
