Valdai Discussion Club Discusses Prospects of Nuclear Energy in the Middle East

On January 18, 2016, the Valdai Discussion Club held a presentation of a report entitled "Prospects for Nuclear Power in the Middle East: Russia’s Interests".

The modern Middle East displays the most dynamic rates of nuclear energy development among "newcomer states", i.e. countries that are just beginning to generate nuclear energy. In September 2011, Iran was the first state of the region to launch a nuclear power plant unit. In 2017, the United Arab Emirates will kick-start the first nuclear unit at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant. Until recently, Russian specialists were actively preparing to break the ground for the first nuclear reactor in Turkey. A technology supplier has already been chosen for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Jordan. In November 2015, Egypt signed an intergovernmental agreement with Russia on the construction of the country's first nuclear power plant.

The report "Prospects for Nuclear Power in the Middle East: Russia’s Interests" analyzes the potential and factors of nuclear energy development in countries of the Middle East, impacts of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster, modern political and economic processes in the region on the prospects and plans for nuclear energy development in the Middle East, as well as the potential role the Russian Federation can play in their realization.

The report was hammered out by a team of analysts from Russia and countries of the Middle East. Anton Khlopkov, Director of the Center for Energy and Security Studies (CENESS), is the Editor-in-Chief of the report and the Chair of the Research Group.

The discussions of the report were attended by:

- Fyodor Lukyanov, Research Director of the Foundation for Development and Support of the Valdai Discussion Club, Editor-in-Chief of the Russia in Global Affairs journal

- Mikhail Lysenko, Advisor of the Center for Energy and Security Studies; Director of the Department for International Cooperation, State Corporation on Atomic Energy ‘Rosatom' (2008-2014)

- Irina Zvyagelskaya, Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies, Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences
