Valdai Club Discusses Nuclear Energy in the Middle East in Vienna

On January 29, 2016, in Vienna the Valdai Discussion Club presented a report entitled "Prospects for Nuclear Power in the Middle East: Russia’s Interests".

The modern Middle East displays the most dynamic rates of nuclear energy development among "newcomer states", i.e. countries that are just beginning to generate nuclear energy. In September 2011, Iran was the first state of the region to launch a nuclear power plant unit. In 2017, the United Arab Emirates will kick-start the first nuclear unit at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant. Until recently, Russian specialists were actively preparing to break the ground for the first nuclear reactor in Turkey. A technology supplier has already been chosen for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Jordan. In November 2015, Egypt signed an intergovernmental agreement with Russia on the construction of the country's first nuclear power plant.

The report "Prospects for Nuclear Power in the Middle East: Russia’s Interests" analyzes the potential and factors of nuclear energy development in countries of the Middle East, impacts of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster, modern political and economic processes in the region on the prospects and plans for nuclear energy development in the Middle East, as well as the potential role the Russian Federation can play in their realization.

The report was hammered out by a team of analysts from Russia and countries of the Middle East. Anton Khlopkov, Director of the Center for Energy and Security Studies (CENESS), is the Editor-in-Chief of the report and the Chair of the Research Group.
