Russian Islam and the Middle East

On June 21, 2016, the Valdai Discussion Club will hold a presentation of the Valdai Paper "Russian Islam and the Situation in the Middle East."

Despite the territorial distance, the turbulence in the Middle East has a direct impact on Russian Muslims. In general, the Russian Islamic community avoided radicalization, but hundreds of young people joined the terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq. There is a growing solidarity with the Sunni participants of the Syrian conflict. The country has an ISIS recruiting network. Radical Islamists may well discredit the Russian Muslim community, provoke inter-ethnic and inter-religious hatred inside the country. These trends require the most careful attention of experts.

Main speakers:

• Ahmet Yarlykapov (author of the Paper), Senior Researcher, Center for the Regional Security and Caucasus Studies at the MGIMO University, Russia;

• Ivan Timofeev, Programme Director of the Foundation for Development and Support of the Valdai Discussion Club, Director of Programs at the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC);

• Ilshat Saetov, scientific director of the Center for Islamic Studies, Marjani Foundation.
