On June 27, 2019, at 12:00, the Valdai Discussion Club will host an expert discussion dedicated to ongoing problems affecting Africa.
Over the past six months, the African continent has produced a lot of newsbreaks. Libya remains divided; armed clashes between the forces of marshal Khalifa Haftar and his opponents have already led to numerous casualties. In Sudan, the army removed the president of the country, who had been in power for 30 years, and took control of the state. After the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika from the post of President of Algeria, protests in the country have persisted non-stop, and more and more high-profile corruption cases are being opened.
The first ever Russia-Africa summit is scheduled for October of this year in Sochi, where the presidents of most of the countries in the continent are expected to attend. In recent years, Russia has sharply increased its peacekeeping and mediation activities in Africa. Russia is actively entering the market of security services on the continent; a number of countries there are home to large Russian companies and specialists.
Are the crises in Arab countries of North Africa related to each other? Is it possible to put an end to instability in the African continent as a whole? What role can Russia play in this process? The participants of the expert discussion will answer these and other questions.
Lev Dengov, Head of the Russian contact group on intra-Libyan settlement;
Vladimir Shubin, Principal Research Fellow at the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honorary Doctor of the University of Western Cape (South Africa);
Natalia Zaiser, Chair of the Board, African Business Initiative.
Oleg Barabanov, Programme director of the Valdai Discussion Club.
