Global Threats in 2018. Forecasting Security Challenges for Russia and the World
Valdai Discussion Club Conference Hall (Bolshaya Tatarskaya 42, Moscow, Russia)

On January 22, 2018, at 11:00 the Valdai Discussion Club will hold an expert discussion, titled “Global Threats in 2018. Forecasting Security Challenges for Russia and the World”. The participants will discuss the main issues of the forecast “Global Threats – 2018”, prepared by the Foreign Policy analytical agency.

Russia enters the new year on a wave of victories. The success of the military operation in Syria, the prospects for the Syrian crisis significantly strengthened its influence in the Middle East. The pressure of sanctions could not undermine Russia from within and did not decrease the activity and efficiency of the Russian foreign policy. The Russian economy growth resumed in new structural conditions.

Last year, Russia successfully manifested itself in those areas where it is successful historically – politics of power, military strategy, diplomacy. However, the world is rapidly becoming more and more complicated. In order to work in this environment, Russia needs new competencies, a global vision of processes and problems. Russia is rapidly moving in the stream of international events, but even the most skilled driver sometimes has a blind zone in the mirrors, and a sudden threat may appear.

The Foreign Policy agency forecast focuses on three key challenges for the Russian foreign policy: correct understanding of changes, use of new opportunities for growth and preventing war. What is the essence of the changes facing the modern world? What will be the trajectory of further world development? What should Russia do? These and other issues will be addressed by the discussion participants.
