G20 in Hamburg: Positive or Negative?
Valdai Discussion Club Conference Hall, Bolshaya Tatarskaya 42, Moscow, Russia

On July 10, at 11:00, Valdai Discussion Club will host a discussion after the Group of Twenty summit in Hamburg.

The upcoming summit, which will be held on 7–8 July, has a high profile. One of the reasons is the first meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump that is expected to take place during the summit.

Another point is the global agenda that is clouded by contradictions between member-states and conflicts they are involved in.

Moreover, the fundamental objective of the G20, resistance to protectionism in the global economy, is at stake. The world’s major economy, the USA, which was previously the main proponent of free trade, is now, in effect, an advocate for the protectionism.

The Hamburg summit results discuss:

  • Fyodor Lukyanov, Research Director of the Foundation for Development and Support of the Valdai Discussion Club,

  • Andrei Kortunov, Director General of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC)

  • Robert Cooper, Diplomat, Special Advisor at the European Commission (2013-2014) – via videoconferencing.

Working languages: English, Russian.
