On April 27, 2018, at 11:00 the Valdai Discussion Club will hold an expert discussion on the results of the 3rd inter-Korean summit, which will take place the same day in the demilitarized zone on the border between North and South Korea.

Six months ago, the very idea of holding the first summit of the two Koreas' leaders after eleven years would be unbelievable. The situation balanced on the brink of war - the US threatened to use force and destroy the DPRK. The escalation was triggered by a series of successful tests of nuclear devices and ballistic missiles by North Korea.

Nevertheless, the intense diplomatic activity and constructive attitude of the parties allowed to move away from the dangerous red line to detente. Since then, the American administration replaced actors responsible for the Korean dossier. Instead of delivering a military strike, Washington sent CIA director Michael Pompeo to Pyongyang on a diplomatic mission. In parallel, Kim Jong-un visited China, where he discussed the prospects of settlement of the Korean peninsula crisis. Intensive inter-Korean consultations paved the way for the first meeting of the two leaders after more than a decade.

At the April 27 summit the leaders of North and South Korea will discuss the possibility of the peninsula denuclearization, prospects of a peace treaty and normalization of the inter-Korean relations. Will they be able to come to a compromise? The summit results and other issues will be discussed by the participants in the event.
