Human + Machine: Innovations and Digital Transformations

The artificial intelligence (AI) is designed to complement the human capabilities according to the “human + machine” formula. Means of AI like neural networks, machine learning, predictive analysis, and chatbots are successfully introduced and used all around the world by companies of various specializations. After all, even adaptive gearbox in a car has a kind of intelligence. What we can expect in the near future was the topic of valdaiclub.com interview with Andrey Filatov, CEO of IBM in Russia and CIS.

Innovations and digital transformation could be the new points of growth in Russia and in any other country of the world. In recent times, more innovations are associated with information technologies, including quantum computing and algorithms, machine learning, distributed transaction ledgers (blockchain), modeling and synthesis of materials and medicines based on the required properties etc.

Some of these technologies are already being successfully implemented and used by leading companies and organizations, while others are being tested in research labs or in pilot projects.

Innovation helps accelerate digital transformation, both in companies and organizations and at the countries’ level. Considering the peculiarities of Russia, the main points of growth, in my opinion, lie in the sphere of application of advanced information technologies in the traditional sectors of the economy.

It is known that many spheres of activities and economic sectors are controlled at the government level. It depends on the government’s progressive policies whether the innovations can enter any particular sphere fast enough. The great potential for improving productiveness lies in the more effective use of the data available: about 80% of data created and accumulated by companies and organizations in the course of their activities is never used or analyzed at all. Modern systems of advanced analytics with AI elements allow processing all available data, regardless of its format and structure.

“Universal digitalization” means ensuring solid protection of information system from the cyber threats, and here AI tools are already helping information security experts by processing a huge number of cyber incidents and working out recommendation based on factual data.

In the next five years, the following technologies could lead to a breakthrough:

- quantum computers and quantum cryptography;

- use of blockchain in the struggle against counterfeit goods;

- unbiased AI (it is clear that AI’s degree of impartiality depends on the quality of the input data in machine learning);

- networked microscope robots for the study of plankton as a basic element of the food chain.

If we talk about a more distant future, all of this could become part of our everyday life.

We believe that AI should be designed to complement the human capabilities according to the “human + machine” formula. Means of AI like neural networks, machine learning, predictive analysis, and chatbots are successfully introduced and used all around the world by companies of various specializations. After all, even adaptive gearbox in a car has a kind of intelligence. What will happen next?

As previously, all the responsibility to make the decisions will be on humans, but we will do so based on the recommendations produced by AI means. Therefore, the use of AI should be as transparent to users as possible, from the perspective of understanding the algorithms of the relevant solutions, the origin and quality of the data, protection of intellectual property at all stages – for example, customer’s personal data must remain their property at all times. Of course, it is necessary to conduct explanatory work and personnel training to help overcome the stereotypes in the perception of modern means of solutions support and to improve overall performance.n human, but he will do so basing on the recommendations produced by AI means. Therefore, the use of AI should be as transparent to users as possible, regarding the understanding the relevant solutions algorithms, the origin and quality of the data, protection of intellectual property at all stages - for example, the customer’s data must remain her own. Of course, it is necessary to conduct explanatory work and staff training to help overcoming the stereotypes in the perception of modern means of supporting solutions and improve the entire performance.
